NEW PROJECT! - December 6, 2009

Prairie Scholars is done and will be released sometime in the next few months. We are working on the cover art and photography. More on that later...

My new project has appeared on here now. It's called "The Coyotes of Black Forest". It is a short story written in the form of a children's fairy tale.

Here's the blurb:

At once a children’s fairy tale, a fantasy thriller, and a dark exploration of mortality, The Coyotes of Black Forest tells the story of the foxes Danfyr and his daughter Aerthwin. Left behind after an emergency evacuation of the forest Danfyr and Aerthwin run for their lives when they discover the reason all the other animals fled. Five dark, unearthly coyotes have entered the forest and hunt all who live there. The foxes’ fantastic journey takes them through the vibrantly beautiful Colorado inspired landscape as the giant twisted coyotes track them closely and ravenously. As the thrilling chase takes the foxes through the mountainous forest and to the final confrontation they come to find that death is unrelenting but love overcomes. Scattered through the 7,543-word count are five poems, which lend the piece greater interest and deepen the experience for the reader.

update: Prairie Scholars - September 21, 2009

My wife Jessica (Clandestine Amigo) and I are in the final stages of recording our side project The Prairie Scholars. Its a rock album with folk roots. It's a very intense record that we've been working on since March or so. Pretty much as soon as Disease in the Heartland came out I started working on this current project. We haven't landed on a title yet but there are several good ones in the mix.

Disease is still doing so well with the critics and I can't believe all the opportunities it has opened up. I see this next record as our escape record. I saw DITH as my reflection of West Texas mindsets and my ultimate commentary on the area. P.S. is more of a creative experiment.

We'll see how it turns out. Please do keep in touch and as always I'm happy to answer any questions you may have about my work. send questions to andy@andyeppler.com

The Kelly Boys - August 5, 2009

Well they rolled back into to town again, I told them not to come
Wanted men all drinking hard and thinking I’m some bum
So I loaded up the twelve gage, packed a brace of thirty-eights
And the sun was gone and those Kelly Boys were the worst ones in the state

But I am the sheriff what was I supposed to do?

For you I do with these rusty guns and these worn out hands
For you I do what I didn’t want to, I didn’t want to

Four of them and one of me I knew I couldn’t miss
If they had all just moved along it wouldn’t have to come to this
First shot hit young Jim Kelly right between these eyes
I turned the twelve on Bobby he had no time for goodbyes
Collin and his brother Phil jumped back behind the bar
They pulled out all their guns but they knew they’d never get too far

I am the sheriff what was I supposed to do?

Phil’s first shot was a wild one and it went into the wall
But one blast from my thirty-eight just blew away his jaw
Collin made a run for it, but he was never quite that fast
Desperate times are desperate things and those steps would be his last

But I am the sheriff what was I supposed to do?

SXSW - March 18, 2009

Just played SXSW today. I think I hate coming to Austin because the whole town feels depressed and pretentious. I have a bunch of friends here but I don't much like coming here. I like Colorado and every day I think of another reason to move there.

I can never sleep - December 13, 2008

I'm up late again. I'm driving to Dallas in about 2 hours for my buddy Joel's Bachelor party. Wow, it's going to be a long one (that's what she said). I hope I can make it w/o passing out on the way. I think I'm going to be very cranky on Sunday when I get back. My wife LOVES it when I get cranky.

Also, I have been drinking a lot less than usual as of late. Wonder what my body will think of this weekend. I think this could get ugly.

Had a good little tour through LA this last week. I made a few Videos on the youtube machine.

It's 8:30am and I am dying - September 26, 2008

I have been having trouble sleeping and I don't really know what to do. I've always had trouble with it but I am going freaking crazy now.

I'm playing at the Lubbock music festival tomorrow and i just hope my brain will come back online soon.

current news - August 5, 2008

This summer has been crazy so far! I'm needing a break before the Fall comes to kick my ass (as it usually does). I've been looking at re-releasing a record I put out during my 5 months 5 records run... one of them was actually really good. It's a concept album (it was a story running through it) about a guy who cheats on his wife but when his mistress threatens to blackmail him he murders her (and that's just in the first song). I think it is still my best lyrical work to date. I don't know when that will come out because I'm trying to decide between re-recording it or just trying to clean it up a bit.

also coming soon: I'm working on my wife's live record "Jessica Eppler and the Clandestine Amigos". It's almost ready.

I'm half way through a live record of my own

I'm also making headway on a new record that's got the working title of "American Diseases".

so get excited! as always my records There is No Underground and Dark Places are on iTunes for those of you who haven't been able to grab them yet.

the answer - July 29, 2008

Memoirs are a stupid thing for a 23 year old to concern himself with but I was packing up some paintings I had had displayed at a local art space a while back and one of the audience members from the concert I had just played asked me what it was really like being a young independent artist in Lubbock, TX. I had to think about it for a few seconds because it’s actually a pretty sweeping question. I asked him to clarify what he was really wanting to know but he just said “You know, just tell me everything”. I didn’t know. I told him I’d try to get back to him in a year or so with his answer. This is the answer.

My name is Andy Eppler and as I write this I am 23 years old. I live in Lubbock, Texas in a smallish apartment with my wife Jessica, 21, and our two cats Tifa and Red XIII. I am a local songwriter and I have achieved a certain level of success in the public eye, nothing spectacular really but I don’t have to work a day job. I have met and or played with almost all of the people the fine citizens of Lubbock consider to be “musical legends” and they all give me the same piece of advice “get out”. Joe Ely yelled it at me and threw things at me until I got out of his dressing room but I think his real meaning was clear (this never really happened). I think this town is like the girl in high school that no matter how many dates you take her on or how sweet you are to her parents and friends, she will never put out. Conversely, Austin is so easy that you will never get your turn with her. So what’s the answer to the riddle?

The vast majority of the success I have had has been in the last two years, opening for big names, releasing my debut record and a spoken word album, getting positive reviews, I’ve been building. I hope I can keep building.

New Song Lyrics - July 11, 2008

The Sale

How much did I spend on death today?
I been thinking bout the price we that we all pay
Politicians workin on ways to pad the bill
Raising the money to help us go and kill

What is it they say bout the nation who goes to war?
And what happens to the courage when we don’t believe no more?
Earn the trophies and stack the dead
Run from the fear that’s been planted in our head

People hungry go without a meal
Who’s the one who worked out this deal?
What is it they say about the nation that rots within?
If you pray you better pray God forgives us of our sin

No wisdom only force
Two party system living through a great divorce
Wipe your tears they make you look weak
Don’t you know God crushes the meek?

Separated by lies and deceit
But in the end we all still turn to meat
Lawyers thinking this all just a money game
Painting the walls with blood shed in our name

Mighty soldier strong and true
But you don’t respect the service they render you
Replace the president to no avail
The country still hides underneath it’s veil

You sold your soul but what did you get for the sale

Political man

Andy Eppler 07

You fascinate me political man,
How your miraculous mind in all it’s infinite
Capacity can hold so much truth and reason.
By what treachery and foolishness has it come to be that
The world has not recognized you as the fountain of wisdom
That you are.
I know it’s true because I asked you.

I know it can be no other way because you instructed me in the path of the higher mind.
Only you political man can know the paths of men
For you have studied the Internet and the news channel and you have deciphered the speech of the anchors and correspondents.
Your throne cannot be challenged for in your twenty-five years you have learned all there is, was, and shall be.
You are the Buddha master, you are the oracle, you are Jesus Christ.

Political man, only you have the right to quote a nameless source and retain your immaculate credibility.
I am working on a song for you but no key has enough notes to express my wonder.
Explain to me again the folly of the two party system or of capitalism or of Marxism because I long to hear your voice carry on in unceasing streams into the meandering ocean of my consciousness.
Show me why I know nothing.
I cannot fathom the depth of your wisdom and I cannot think for myself.
Save me political man.

the Dr. Skoob connection - October 25, 2007

I met Dr. Skoob (Doug Haines) when I was 19. I was playing in a place called the "Ice House". This place was booked for me by a certain booking agent that shall remain nameless. I shouldn't have been playing there. It was not the right scene for me at all. I remember there was a life size plastic long horn in the center of the bar that drunk girls used to get up on and "ride". Well It turned out that my agent brought along with him one of his other talents, a mister Doug Haines. This was the only really good thing that agent ever did for me... or Doug for that matter.

Doug and I became fast friends and he let me open for him a few times and he gave me some contacts for a few bars in town. Doug never took it upon himself to make me successful but he did show the the right doors to walk through. I credit him for my early winnings. It would have taken me twice as long to get where I am if not for Dr. Skoob. www.doctorskoob.com

skin tight pants - September 11, 2007

WHY???? Will someone please explain this trend to me? I''m not old. I should be able to understand how the young person's mind works but I can't figure this out. It can't be comfortable can it?

It's not so much the girls because they always wear the tight jeans and stuff but guys... ... .... ... .... I don't know how to explain my perplexedness! Where do you even "stash the treasure"?

Some one please help me! I want to understand, I really do. Please remember those pictures of your parents and how embarassed they are of how they looked. Time makes a fool of the man who lives in the moment!
